While trying to photograph the lush beauty of the Mayan jungle, Pío Cabanillas was surprised by the celebration of Passion Week in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, better known as Antigua.
Today this city is a World Heritage Site for its exemplary Spanish-influenced baroque buildings and its historic and volcanic landscapes. This mixture of the colonial and the pre-Hispanic is also reflected through the lens; the intensity and mysticism in the faces of the participants during the ritual make up an ethnic portrait that makes the ephemeral of the moment permanent.
The graphic edition by Horacio Fernández, Antigua is also the technology of another time. With photographs printed imitating the results of rotogravure, the images ooze dense blacks and extreme contrasts.
