Interview with Patricia Esquivias
“THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOOK AND A WORK OF ART”

Patricia Esquivias (Caracas, 1979) explores the past and present through the lightness of everyday life, drawing on a wide range of records and archives. Her work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and more recently at Fabra i Coats with the exhibition Atentament. This year, she takes part in ArtsLibris as a member of the ArtsLibris Banc Sabadell Award jury and as the artist behind the fair’s gloves.
In your recent exhibition at Fabra i Coats, paper played a central role. How did this project come about?
For a long time, I had wanted to make a book bringing together different letters I had written over the years, connected to various projects. Each letter had come about for a different reason: sometimes as part of a research project, other times simply to communicate something specific, but they always ended up containing a great deal of information.
At one point I thought, “I already have so many letters.” And actually, when it comes to the visual side of my work, I prefer text. So rather than making a catalogue, I liked the idea of publishing these letters.
When the opportunity to exhibit at Fabra i Coats came up, we thought: why not select the works based on the letters? The exhibition included the artworks, but also the letters and the book.
What does a book allow you to do that an exhibition doesn’t?
Above all, time.
You can pick up a book, leave it halfway through and come back to it later. It feels completely natural. In an exhibition, on the other hand, you arrive, find an explanatory video, and it’s already started. I find the way a book allows you to experience time ideal.
It’s a format I haven’t explored much, but one that feels very close to the way I work. All my work is narrative and relies heavily on layers of memory. And there’s also something about a book simply being there, on a shelf, always waiting for you to return to it.
What makes a book become a work of art?
For me, there isn’t such a clear distinction between a book and a work of art. I’m not exactly sure where that boundary would be.
Anything can be a work of art if you consider it to be one. It’s the person who owns it who makes that decision. I don’t think it necessarily depends on a particular form or a specific edition.
My mother, for example, once gave me something that was supposedly both a book and a work of art, and the idea was that it should be displayed inside a Perspex box. And I thought, “Well, where’s the fun in that?” I don’t like that.
At a time dominated by screens and the constant circulation of images, what does the physical nature of a book offer?
It’s a much more pleasant object. It’s easier on the eyes, and it also offers all those different tactile sensations.
I remember books you almost find yourself stroking because you love the texture of the paper or the cover. That whole experience of holding an object, of having pages… it’s nothing like a screen.
And there’s also something gentle about an object that’s simply there, without constantly demanding your attention.
Unlike endless scrolling, a book allows you to slow down.
Yes. It doesn’t have that light constantly demanding your attention. That difference is enormous.
This year, you’re a member of the ArtsLibris Banc Sabadell Award jury. With so many publications, what makes one stand out from the rest?
I don’t think I’m looking for anything specific. A book is a limited space that can contain absolutely anything. It might have political or social content that interests me, but it could just as easily be something completely different.
I think about the way I buy books, and it’s always closely connected to whatever I’m working on at the time. Your mind becomes very focused on certain subjects, and your library gradually builds up in clusters.
For a while, you develop a particular sensitivity towards certain things. So I suppose this time I’ll have to make that decision on the spot: see what I find, what catches my attention.
This year, for the fifth time, ArtsLibris, together with the Foto Colectania Foundation and in collaboration with the Friends of Eloi Gimeno Association and the Agustí Centelles Library, will present the Eloi Gimeno Award for Best Photobook among the exhibitors participating in ArtsLibris Barcelona 2026. The artist’s career revitalised Spanish photography through photobooks, taking aesthetic risks, self-publishing, working elegantly on the design of his books, and initiating processes of collective creation.
The jury for the 2026 Eloi Gimeno Award is composed of Elisa Medde, Director of the Foto Colectania Foundation; Óscar Monzón, photographer; and Laura Pelayo González, Head of the Library and Documentation Centre at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Each year, ArtsLibris presents the ArtsLibris Banc Sabadell Award. The award consists of the acquisition and inclusion in the Banc Sabadell Art Collection of the editions selected by the jury. The award aims to support publications that propose an original connection between ideas and visual content and explore innovative formats and aesthetic and conceptual approaches.

The ArtsLibris First Print Award was created to promote emerging talent and facilitate the transition from academia to the professional world. Open to students at universities and schools collaborating with ArtsLibris, it recognises an artist’s book or photobook project with the potential to become a published work. The selected project receives support from ArtsLibris throughout the editing and publishing process, building a bridge between university, creativity and publishing practice, while giving visibility and support to new generations of authors.
For the award’s first edition, we present ROCE. La intimitat com a estructura del desig après entre dones, by Nara Fusté, a project developed from a final degree project at Elisava, with the collaboration of Galeria RocioSantaCruz, I am Nuria and Fedrigoni.

FujiFilm will showcase images from works by Teo Vázquez (La valla de la discordia, 2025) and Toni Amengual (Terra Ferma, 2025).
Mescladís Bar & Yogi Tea
This year, ArtsLibris will feature a bar open throughout the fair, offering a space to take a break, enjoy a drink and continue sharing and enjoying the event. Mescladís will offer food and drinks for purchase, while Yogi Tea will provide a complimentary selection of teas.
ArtsLibris expands its collection of gloves with a creation by Patricia Esquivias, featuring a cut that indicates «Find the hands; give the option».
This year’s cotton bags have been printed with El beso, a work by Ouka Leele (1980).
Fotografías de la noche y del día is the latest publication in the AL Series, a collection of artist’s books produced and published by ArtsLibris for the Barcelona fair. Co-published with Delpire & Co in Paris, with the collaboration of Fujifilm, it takes the form of a box containing images in different formats, signed by four photographers: Toni Amengual, Nara Fusté, Ketevan Gvinepadze and Julien Carreyn, who also serves as artistic director.
Created over the nights of 13, 14 and 15 July at the ArtsLibris bookshop, the images will be presented in an exhibition at the bookshop from Saturday, 30 October to 14 November.
