As a long time collector of photographic images, in Unknown Photographers, Andrés Galeano looks to systematize different poetic sets that refer to the semantic and mnemonic possibilities of analogue photography, a technic that is clearly disappearing. If we consider the transformations brought about by the digital age and its vertiginous daily production of images, doomed to oblivion, the artist’s provocations continually suggest that is not just digital images that are subjected to an ephemeral existence in the current virtual world. This was, in fact, an issue found in analogue photography despite its physicality and familiarity. Galeano’s work, therefore, addresses a central matter in contemporary art and culture: What space can the photographic image occupy, and how can it evolved when its productive abundance or programme obsolescence seemingly leads to its inexorable fate of being discarded.
