Sharkification is the chronicle of the photographer’s journey through the favelas of Vidigal, Rocinha, Alto de Boa Vista, Complexo Alemão and Morro de Santa Marta – all in Rio de Janeiro – and proposes a debate on a project initiated in Nigeria. Cristina de Middel spent a month among five favelas in the Brazilian metropolis, in her residence at the Inclusaritz Foundation, to give continuity to the project “This is what hatred did” started in Nigeria. The photographer returned to the city three more times to conclude what Editora Madalena is now publishing in photobook format, under the title Sharkification: “it comes from pacification. I am a master of absurd titles”, she jokes.
