No Fear of Glass

The publication “No Fear of Glass”, with texts by Sabine Marcelis, Anna Puigjaner and Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, photographs by Pim Top and graphic design by Sophia Schullan, is the result of the intervention of the same name as the artist, together with Side Gallery and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, presented at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion between December 2019 and January 2020.

Sabine Marcelis explored how the ideals of design, materiality and proportions with which the Pavilion was built can be translated into the creation of functional pieces of furniture. The title of the exhibition and the publication refers to the title of Josep Quetglas’s book “No Fear of Glass” about the Barcelona Pavilion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. It is famous that Mies van der Rohe was asked not to use too much glass in the Pavilion and, in turn, Marcelis’s works are produced from glass, pushing the limits of the material to the extreme.
