Rodríguez-Méndez’s work originates in the language of sculpture, from which it has evolved in directions that connect it with materiality, semantics, temporality, and physicality. Over nearly thirty years, it has formed an elusive, hard-to-classify, and highly evocative body of work that has gradually dematerialized to the point where absence, void, or omission find structure to assert themselves, stand, and endure. Humores y Espesores takes shape through a dual approach: on the one hand, it outlines a succinct overview of his already extensive artistic career; on the other, it presents a selection of recently created photographic series, installations, or actions, some of them previously unpublished.
Humores y Espesores, the book accompanying the exhibition of the same name held at the Museo Ca2M and curated by Ángel Calvo Ulloa, highlights the relevance of a body of work that has materialized in installations conceived with uncommon spatial rigor and understanding, in site-specific projects that have shaped both the artist’s daily life and studio for long periods, or in series extended over more than a decade, coexisting with other developments and opening new avenues of research. All of this emerges from a sculptural language to which the artist devotes his practice, regardless of the form it takes.
The book includes texts by Ángel Calvo Ulloa, Marta Mestre, Thibaut Verhoeven, Laura Vallés Vilchez, as well as an interview between the artist and the exhibition’s curator.
