Brazilian modernist photography emerged in the 1940s as a response to the experience of modernity that Brazil was undergoing, alongside Bossa Nova, Cinema Novo, and the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. The 120 works gathered in this volume—originating from photo clubs, documentary photography, and photojournalism—demonstrate the political as well as aesthetic reach of this movement, which positioned Brazil on the stage of the international postwar avant-garde.
