PHANTOM. Mies as Rendered Society\u00a0is an intervention created by Andr\u00e9s Jaque at the Barcelona Pavilion,\u00a0resulting from the research\u00a0which Jaque has carried out over\u00a0the last two years, at the invitation\u00a0of the Fundaci\u00f3 Mies van der\u00a0Rohe and Banc Sabadell Foundation.\u00a0A significant portion of the\u00a0items which are safeguarded in the\u00a0basement upon which the Pavilion\u00a0was built have been distributed at\u00a0different locations throughout the\u00a0Pavilion space. This basement is\u00a0presented as the Pavilion\u2019s ghost\u00a0(PHANTOM), which had never\u00a0drawn the attention of people who\u00a0came to visit and study the Pavilion,\u00a0but for which Jaque acknowledges\u00a0an important role in the emergence\u00a0of his architecture as a social type\u00a0of construction.<\/p>\n
The team responsible for reconstruction\u00a0of the Pavilion of \u201929\u00a0thought that the basement would\u00a0facilitate the control and maintenance\u00a0of its installations. It also\u00a0decided that entry should be made\u00a0difficult so as to avoid its future use\u00a0as an exhibition space in which Mies\u00a0and the Pavilion were explained.\u00a0In the end, the basement has been\u00a0used to store all of the material witnesses\u00a0which provide an account\u00a0of the social fabric involved in a\u00a0shared project: every day reinterpreting\u00a0the May morning on which\u00a0the Pavilion of \u201929 was first opened.<\/p>\n
The basement, like the portrait of\u00a0Dorian Grey, contains everything\u00a0that makes it possible to see the\u00a0Pavilion as a monumental collective\u00a0construction. However, it is\u00a0concealed so as not to diminish the\u00a0illusion that the product was received\u00a0directly from an enlightened\u00a0hand, that of Mies, who worked in\u00a0Barcelona in 1929. The basement\u00a0still houses the phantom public: a\u00a0reference to the well-known text\u00a0by Walter Lippman The Phantom\u00a0Public (New Jersey, 1925), from the\u00a0societies which contribute to creating
\nthe Pavilion on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
As Mies himself pointed out, architecture\u00a0is built in such a way that\u00a0what is visible conforms that which\u00a0is hidden. The Barcelona Pavilion is\u00a0an arena of confrontation organized\u00a0in the form of a two-story building,\u00a0in which two inter-dependent notions\u00a0of the political lie in dispute.\u00a0The well-lit upper floor revives\u00a0foundational concepts of the political\u00a0(in which the extraordinary,\u00a0origins and essences lead the way\u00a0for that which is common), while\u00a0the dark basement was constructed\u00a0using contingencies and provisional\u00a0agreements. The upper\u00a0floor is physically transparent, but\u00a0it conceals the social pacts which\u00a0occur inside, to provide access to\u00a0an experience of everyday incalculability.\u00a0The lower floor is opaque,\u00a0yet it is the place where the contracts,\u00a0experiments and disputes\u00a0which construct the Pavilion gain\u00a0transparency. The Pavilion constructs\u00a0a belief through the way in which its two floors operate: \u2018the\u00a0exceptional emerges in the absence\u00a0of the ordinary.\u2019 The intervention\u00a0is based on the suspicion that the\u00a0recognition and rearticulation of\u00a0these two spheres can contribute\u00a0new possibilities in which architecture\u00a0finds answers to contemporary\u00a0challenges.<\/p>\n
