The\u00a0artist<\/span>\u00a0of Viennese Actionism, Otto\u00a0Muehl<\/span>, founded in 1970 a\u00a0commune<\/span>\u00a0with the\u00a0intention<\/span>\u00a0of merging art and\u00a0life<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The project was exceptionally developed, and it grew to over five hundred members, making it one of the largest counter-cultural communities in the 20th century Europe.<\/span>\u00a0At the beginning of the 1980s, the group lightened its social-revolutionary ideology and moved from an economy based on rural collectivism to one based on financial speculation.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0discipline<\/span>\u00a0of programmed work ended up bringing a\u00a0contradiction<\/span>\u00a0between its high profitability and the hedonistic and collectivist principles that had\u00a0been<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0foundation<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0commune<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0In an\u00a0attempt<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0recover<\/span>\u00a0their initial spirit, they\u00a0decided<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0invest<\/span>\u00a0in a\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0headquarters\u00a0dedicated<\/span>\u00a0to artistic and leisure activities and integrated into\u00a0nature<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0In 1987 they\u00a0acquired<\/span>\u00a0a large, isolated and abandoned farm that was once one of the\u00a0main<\/span>\u00a0agricultural operations on La\u00a0Gomera<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0El Cabrito.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0enclave<\/span>\u00a0that the\u00a0comuneros<\/span>\u00a0had\u00a0chosen<\/span>\u00a0as their holiday centre\u00a0now became\u00a0a tourist resort after the\u00a0dissolution<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0group<\/span>\u00a0in 1990.<\/span>\u00a0The Canarian period of the\u00a0<\/span>commune<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>constitutes<\/span>\u00a0the final scenario where those emancipatory\u00a0<\/span>utopias<\/span>\u00a0of the sixties, fed by the\u00a0<\/span>great<\/span>\u00a0myths of modernity, will be\u00a0<\/span>surpassed<\/span>\u00a0by their own internal contradictions to\u00a0<\/span>end<\/span>\u00a0up\u00a0<\/span>deriving<\/span>, with total naturalness, in a predictable tourist\u00a0<\/span>utopia<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
