La seva gran obra, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiral Jetty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, constru\u00efda en el Great Salt Lake, a Utah, cont\u00e9 l&#8217;esperit d&#8217;alguns dels m\u00e9s grans monuments de civilitzacions passades, sent contempor\u00e0nia en concepte i execuci\u00f3. Smithson va ser un escriptor prol\u00edfic i original, els punts de vista del qual van afectar profundament el curs de l&#8217;art contemporani. Aquesta selecci\u00f3 d&#8217;escrits reuneix textos publicats per l&#8217;artista en revistes com Artforum, Arts International i Arts of Environment, entre 1966 i 1973. La seva peculiar capacitat d&#8217;an\u00e0lisi, el seu acostament cr\u00edtic a l&#8217;art i les din\u00e0miques socials, culturals o econ\u00f2miques generades al voltant d&#8217;aquest, fan, dels seus escrits, obres alhora intr\u00ednseques i independents a la seva creaci\u00f3 art\u00edstica. Smithson va n\u00e9ixer a Nova Jersey el 1938 i va morir el 1973 a Texas, en un tr\u00e0gic accident aeri. Un any abans va escriure: \u201cNo m&#8217;interessen les obres d&#8217;art que suggereixen un \u2018proc\u00e9s\u2019 dins dels l\u00edmits metaf\u00edsics d&#8217;una habitaci\u00f3 neutral. No existeix llibertat en aquest tipus de jocs conductuals. L&#8217;artista que es comporta com una rata de B.F. Skinner, que fa \u2018trucs dif\u00edcils\u2019 ha de ser evitat. Un proc\u00e9s contingut no \u00e9s \u2014de cap manera\u2014 un proc\u00e9s. Jo m&#8217;inclino per un art que tingui en compte l&#8217;efecte directe dels elements.
